High Bridge over the Harlem: An Art History Walk (5.5 miles)

Let’s shorewallk with an artist’s eye on the scenery!

**NOTE** This is a repeat of the same walk held Nov 2021.

The High Bridge, Harlem River, and the surrounding area have inspired artists over the years. On this moderate-paced, guided walk, we will compare what we see today to how artists captured the places in the past.

START: Arrive by 10am to use restroom. Walk begins at 10:15am, prompt.

END: About 2:30pm'ish, approximate

MEETING LOCATION: George Washington Bridge bus terminal, seating area on top floor. Fort Washington Ave between 178th & 179th Streets in upper Manhattan.

DIRECTIONS: Take A train to 175th, exit platform toward uptown end, walk past the token booth, proceed up a set of stairs that leads to a pedestrian tunnel. The tunnel goes directly into the bus terminal. When at bus terminal, go up escalators/stairs to top-floor seating area. There are restrooms on the top floor.

END LOCATION: Same as meeting location.

DISTANCE: 5.5 miles approx.

PACE: Moderate walking pace. This is NOT a fast-paced hike, though walkers should be able to keep up with group and be comfortable with hills and stairs. This is a guided walk.

TERRAIN: City sidewalks and paved park paths, with a short stretch on dirt path. We will walk across the High Bridge. Route includes hills and stairs.

BATHROOMS are at meeting location, at 3.5 mile mark, and at end location.

BRING your own water/snack as we will not stop for purchases.

WEATHER POLICY: It can be windy on the High Bridge, where we will be spending time. A wind-breaking layer is recommended. In case of iffy weather, hike leader will post a comment on this page by 8am on day of hike. As always, check the forecast and dress for the weather.

CONTACT: If you have questions not covered in this description, text 917-847- 1536 (text only, no calls, please). Hike leader does not check or respond to messages once walk is underway.
